In the latest part of our series of Q&As with the cast and crew we would like to introduce you to the costume designer & co-producer of Once Bitten\u2026 textile artist Debbie Tomkies<\/em><\/p>\n

What is your favourite colour?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Purple (or pink?).<\/p>\n

What was the first costume you ever designed and how old were you?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The first costumes I ever made were for my Sindy dolls (she is the UK\u2019s Barbie). In my teens I made extra pocket money designing sweaters and selling them to my school friends!<\/p>\n

Who is your role model or inspiration?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Kaffe Fassett.<\/p>\n

When did you know you wanted to be a costume designer?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

When I realised you could make things for adults!<\/p>\n

What one essential thing do you always have with you when designing?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Colour pencils, paper, yarn and knitting needles.<\/p>\n

What is your favourite biscuit?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Dark chocolate digestive.<\/p>\n

Name a film which always makes you happy?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (the 1971 original).<\/p>\n

Name a film which always makes you cry?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

James Cameron\u2019s Titanic.<\/p>\n

Tea or coffee?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Tea. Builder strength (I\u2019m from Yorkshire).<\/p>\n

What was the best part of working on Once Bitten\u2026?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Working with some really lovely people and seeing the set going from a derelict shell to a New York hotel room.<\/p>\n

What sucked the most about working on Once Bitten\u2026?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Cleaning the set before we decorated it, especially removing 150 years of grime from the bathroom. And the dust, there was so much dust!<\/p>\n

What are you working on now \/ next?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I am currently making a series of online tutorial videos for Knit Now magazine<\/a>. It\u2019s fun being on the other side of the camera for a change!<\/p>\n

Any advice for aspiring designers?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Make things. Draw. Visit galleries and museums for ideas and inspiration. And just make things!<\/p>\n
